The Early Years
Rajesh Shah began his professional journey in 1984 as a Medical Representative, covering the rural and urban belts of Gujarat on a modest Luna moped with a 12-kilogram medical sample bag. From these humble beginnings, he learned every dimension of India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem—prescriber behavior, distribution dynamics, and the power of ethical marketing.
During his early years, he worked with some of the country’s most respected pharmaceutical organizations, including:
- SDL India (Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd.)
- BPL (British Physical Laboratories India Ltd)
- PCI (Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industries)
- Lupin (Ahmedabad HQ)
Through persistent effort and deep understanding of the trade, he rose to the position of All-India Marketing Head at Sharda Drugs Public Ltd., leading national-level marketing operations and product strategy.
The Business Journey: High Compliance Legacy
Rajesh Shah founded Divine Formulations in 1996 as a startup, later incorporated as Divine Life Care Pvt. Ltd. By 2002, he established an independent GMP-compliant manufacturing facility in Sanand, Ahmedabad, spanning 32,985 sq. ft. The unit focused on quality manufacturing rather than scale at all costs, with only 1 batch recall across 20,000+ batches manufactured over 20 years.
Under his leadership as Chairman and Managing Director, the company crossed over 200 crores in consolidated sales from 1996 to 2016. He grew the company to manufacture over 300 formulation products, personally calibrating taste and stability across five therapeutic divisions—Tablets, Capsule, Liquid, Ointment, Powder, and niche NDDS prototypes. By 2012, the company had reached a CAGR of 14.5%.

Even as Chairman and Managing Director, Rajesh Shah never stopped doing what founders rarely admit to—calibrating taste and stability himself of over 300+ formulations registered with Food & Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) and measuring proprietary compounds himself [a tough skill] because precision, to him, was personal showcasing excellence with only 1 batch recall from over 20,000+ batches.
Innovation & Transition
From 1984 to 2016, this first-generation pharmaceutical journey was shaped by steady process understanding, disciplined manufacturing, and consistent ethical practice. A crowning achievement of this era was his calibrating taste and stability of over 300+ registered drug formulations along with his 2013/2014 trade-secret invention of the Sildenafil + Dextrose + Sodium Benzoate + Sodium Citrate formulation. This stands as a benchmark for how traditional pharmaceutical experience can yield world-changing, stable taste-based inventions—achieved entirely without any external capital association throughout.
In 2016, he sold the business after newly obtained WHO-GMP certification for the facility. This exit served as a pause, allowing him to transition naturally into long-term trade-secret invention, paving the way for the future at Smatter LLP / Smatter Corporation.
